How to keep your valuables safe in a hostel

Traveling on a budget is great, as long as that six euro per night hostel in Rome doesn’t end up costing you a passport, ipod, and all of your socks (any backpacker knows the value of a clean pair of socks). Theft is likely on the road, and becomes almost inevitable when you add factors like:

1) Other poor travelers

2) Valuables

3) Little to no security (i.e. lockers or safes)

4) CREEPY PEOPLE

5) Heavy drinking

These factors and others will guarantee that your valuables will be stolen if you stay at a hostel unless you follow these five simple rules.

1) Trust NO ONE.

I work in a hostel. I am a nice guy. I am an exception. Seriously, if you are traveling alone and you are worried about your stuff – your passport for instance – getting stolen on your night on the town, don’t think that by giving it to the “staff” that you have covered yourself. Hostel staff are mostly people one step up from vagrants making terrible wages in order to live for free. I can’t count how many times a staff member has run off from the hostel in the middle of the night with hundreds of euros of valuables and cash. It happens all the time. After having seen some of the people here, the last thing I would ever do is give them my valuables. Do this long enough and you will have your passport, ipod, etc., sold. Count on it.

It’s like they say at the airport – don’t let someone else watch your bag. Odds are you’ll be fine, but eventually someone is going to put something in their and customs doesn’t care. Same thing with hostels. The people that work there can be just as sketchy if not more so than the guests.

2) Know where your stuff is. Always.

This sounds simple, and it should be, but most travelers I’ve seen don’t have a method to their packing madness. They simply wad up their KISS cover band and “I Heart Roma” t-shirts with their passports and cliche photos and chuck them into the main compartments of their bag. If you do this it is a guarantee that you will lose something. Backpacking, while supposedly relaxed and carefree demands a certain level of personal vigilance. People are constantly trying to take advantage of you, and if you’re not prepared they will. After all, it’s most people’s job to fleece the tourists. So, when it comes to organizing your stuff, it is vital that you keep all high profile items, passport, papers of importance, etc in specific locations, preferably on your person at all times. Simply knowing where your camera, phone, and wallet are will help

Rome’s Idyllic Italian 16th Century Villa d’Este

This idyllic Italian 16th-century garden; the Villa d’Este is now a UNESCO world heritage site. With its impressive variety of fountains, nymphs, grottoes, plays of water, and music, it constitutes a much-copied model for European gardens in the mannerist and baroque styles. To make your stay in Rome even more fantastic, you must visit the Villa d’Este, one of Tivoli’s two breath taking villas. Rome apartments and Rome hotels are abundant in Rome and you only have to catch the train from the Roma-Pescara Line, Stazione Tivoli.

The history of the villa is a long one, starting with Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este (1509-1572) who became the Governor of Tivoli and took over the Governor’s palace, located in a former Benedictine monastery, which he asked Pirro Ligorio to remodel to his taste. The chief painter of the ambitious internal decoration was Livio Agresti from Forl and it was he that created the lavishly frescoed reception rooms. From 1550 until his death in 1572, when the villa was nearing completion, Cardinal d’Este created a palatial setting around the villa designed to impress his guests. Surrounded by a spectacular terraced garden in the late-Renaissance mannerist style, the garden took full advantage of the dramatic slope but required innovations in bringing a sufficient water supply, which was employed in cascades, water tanks, troughs and pools, water jets and fountains, giochi d’acqua. To create ample space for the gardens a whole area of the town had to be demolished, many inhabitants being forced to sell or face expropriation.

The villa itself is magnificent, the central main entrance leads to the Appartamento Vecchio, the “Old Apartment” made for Ippolito d’Este, with its vaulted ceilings frescoed in scenes by Livio Agresti and his students, centered on the grand Sala, with its spectacular view down the main axis of the gardens, which fall away in a series of terraces. To the left and right are suites of rooms, that on the left containing Cardinal Ippolito’s's library and his bedchamber with the chapel beyond, and the private stairs to the lower apartment, the Appartamento Nobile, which gives directly onto Pirro Ligorio’s Gran Loggia.

There are so many fountains in the gardens that the sounds of water reverberate in every corner and it was this that inspired the Romantic composer Franz Liszt to write a piano suite entitled “Fountains of the Villa d’Este”. The gardens are opening during the summer but you will find it difficult to see them at any other time of year. Staying in the buzzing centre of Rome, in superb Rome accommodation is a brilliant way to enjoy your break in Rome and you can be at the Villa d’Este for opening at 8.30am if you’re quick! The gardens close one hour before sunset.

WHEN IN ROME

(an excerpt from my book From London to Cairo)

A Tale of Two Brothers

The symbol for Rome is a milking wolf. I learned the reason for this when I visited The Time Elevator; a virtual reality ride that brings people back in time to reenact the history of Rome.

Roman myth tells the story of a priestess who was required to remain a virgin but gave birth to twin boys instead. The Emperor ordered them to be destroyed. A soldier took them out to the forest but could not bear to kill them himself so he left them for the wolves. A mother wolf adopted the boys and they grew strong. When they became men, they decided to start a village but could not agree on which hill to build it. Unable to find a compromise, one brother killed the otherthen founded Rome.

Nice storyeh? I guess this set the stage for Rome to become a nation of conquerors.

Fresh off the Train

I arrived in Rome in the early afternoon and set off to look for a cheap hotel with a guy I met on the train. John is from Boston and had flown to Venice to take part in a marathon. He had some time to kill and decided to visit Rome to see the coliseum. He was in his late twenties, very handsome and one of the most scatterbrained people I have ever met. I loved him right away. He turned out to be a very amusing person to hang out with.

After walking around for an hour and finding no vacancies at any of the hotels, we finally stopped in at a tourist information office to elicit help. The friendly girl at the office managed to find me a great hotel room for a reasonable price in the area while John chose to stay in a hostel not far from my hotel.

Roman Coliseum

The first night we decided to walk to the Coliseum. The hotel gave me a great map of Rome with big pictures of all the monuments. The walk took a long time because we stopped at every food establishment along the way so John could feed his insatiable appetite for Italian foodI wondered if he would ever get full.

Finally we caught our first glimpse of the coliseum sitting at the end of a busy street, the home of gladiators and emperors, and a piece of living history. Wow! This was incredible!

Construction on the Coliseum started in 70 AD and ten years later Titus opened it. The opening ceremonies and games lasted for 100 days during which an astounding 5000 wild animals were put to death. The Coliseum had a capacity of 70,000 spectators who came to see everything from gladiator combats to wild

Budget Travel – What Is Hostelling

Hostelling was once thought of as the exclusive province of college kids traveling through Europe for the first time. However, hostelling has grow to include all ages, and all types of people. When traveling on a budget, staying at a hostel can be a great experience for the traveler with a sense of adventure.

Of course, hostel travel is not for everyone, and some travelers would rather spend extra money for solo accommodations. In general, hostel traveling is best suited to solo travelers, or to groups of young people traveling together.

Hostel stays are generally not recommended for families traveling with young children, and many hostels do not accept children under a certain age.

Most hostels are set up as dormitory style rooms, with a number of bunk beds arranged throughout the room. The number of bunk beds in a single room varies, with the average from four to ten bunks per room. Each traveler is assigned a specific bunk upon check-in.

Almost all hostels in the United States divide their accommodations according to gender, with the female guests in one block of rooms and the male guests in another. In multi-floor hostels, each gender is often assigned a specific floor or group of floors.

In many European locations and elsewhere around the world, however, many hostel rooms have mixed genders sharing a room. If this is a concern, be sure to ask about it.

Many woman traveling alone found no problem with these arrangements, and many have stayed in hostels throughout Europe, including Rome, London and Amsterdam. Some visitors, however, are surprised at these arrangements.

The bathroom accommodations at hostels vary as well, with some rooms containing a shared bathroom and shower, while other hostels will have shower and bathroom facilities located in the hallway. If this is an important consideration, you should make sure to ask about bathroom facilities when making the reservation.

And reservations are becoming increasingly important at hostels, especially during the summer months in popular locations.

Where once it was common for travelers simply to drop by the hostel and get a bed, it is now not at all unusual for hostels in popular tourist destinations to be booked solid for months.

The main appeal of staying at hostels, of course, is the price. The nightly rate for a hostel rarely rises above $25 or $30 per night, with most hostel accommodations costing far less.

With the average hotel room hovering around $100 to $150 in many locations, it is easy to see why hostels are becoming so popular.

In addition, the staff at most hostels are extremely accommodating and knowledgeable about the local area. Unlike many staff members of some luxury hotels, who travel in from the suburbs and rarely see the city in which the live, hostel staff tend to live in their city, and they have an intimate knowledge of the local attractions, including which attractions are can’t miss and which ones are a waste of money.

In addition, hostels often have access to discounts and coupons for local area attractions and restaurants, and they can provide valuable information on the best, lowest priced restaurants in the area.

While staying at a hostel is not for everyone, and the local hostel will never be mistaken for a Ritz Carlton, hostels can be wonderful budget accommodations for the budget minded traveler.

After all, the goal of travel is to get out and see the world, and hostel travel lets you spend your limited travel dollars doing just that.

Travel To Italy – Rome And Venice

Where does one begin to start when discussing Italy. Well, if you intend to travel there, Rome and Venice are good places to start.

Rome

Perhaps you’ve heard of it? It goes without saying that Rome has a rather prominent past. Lets see, in Rome you will find…[deep breath]…the Vatican, Coliseum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Church of Saint Agnese, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and a guy name Allassandro. Just making sure you’re paying attention. Indeed, Rome is filthy with historically significant attractions. It seems you can’t turn around without bumping into something an Emperor built, captured or destroyed. For those willing to risk potential wrath, there are also the new Divinci Code tours, which take you to the locations found in the book.

In all serious, Rome is a city you should visit at least once in your life. No article could ever do it justice, so I’ll just stop here.

Venice

I fondly refer to Venice as the floating city even though it is apparently sinking. If you’ve seen Venice is movies or televisions shows, the depictions are accurate. Piazza San Marco looks exactly the same, birds and all. The Grande Canal is, well, a grand canal with incredible houses lining it and boats putting up down this water way. Built on mudflats in a lagoon, the city doesn’t really have much room to grow. It just seems paralyzed in time.

Once you’ve conquered the tourist attractions, it will be time to get serious about Venice. The best way to do this is stand in front of your hotel or hostel, determine which direction the tourist attractions lie and start walking in the opposite direction. While you may feel like you’re driving the wrong way on a freeway for a few minutes, you’ll eventually start getting into real Venice.

An entirely different side of Venice will appear and you’ll love it. You’ll find little cafes with locals happy to talk to you [and non-tourist prices]. In fact, the Venetians will tend to hold you in high regard since you’re a tourist who is bypassing the tourist areas. This, of course, will logically lead to a whirl of introductions to this nephew, that son of a brother and so on. Next thing you know, you’ll be complaining about Italian politicians and how things used to be better in the past.

While Rome and Venice are excellent travel destinations, you can’t really go wrong in Italy. For the adventurous, set your itinerary with the old map on a wall and dart technique.
