Travel destinations: Rome, Italy – Part 5

WHEN IN ROME

(an excerpt from my book From London to Cairo)

A Tale of Two Brothers

The symbol for Rome is a milking wolf. I learned the reason for this when I visited The Time Elevator; a virtual reality ride that brings people back in time to reenact the history of Rome.

Roman myth tells the story of a priestess who was required to remain a virgin but gave birth to twin boys instead. The Emperor ordered them to be destroyed. A soldier took them out to the forest but could not bear to kill them himself so he left them for the wolves. A mother wolf adopted the boys and they grew strong. When they became men, they decided to start a village but could not agree on which hill to build it. Unable to find a compromise, one brother killed the otherthen founded Rome.

Nice storyeh? I guess this set the stage for Rome to become a nation of conquerors.

Fresh off the Train

I arrived in Rome in the early afternoon and set off to look for a cheap hotel with a guy I met on the train. John is from Boston and had flown to Venice to take part in a marathon. He had some time to kill and decided to visit Rome to see the coliseum. He was in his late twenties, very handsome and one of the most scatterbrained people I have ever met. I loved him right away. He turned out to be a very amusing person to hang out with.

After walking around for an hour and finding no vacancies at any of the hotels, we finally stopped in at a tourist information office to elicit help. The friendly girl at the office managed to find me a great hotel room for a reasonable price in the area while John chose to stay in a hostel not far from my hotel.

Roman Coliseum

The first night we decided to walk to the Coliseum. The hotel gave me a great map of Rome with big pictures of all the monuments. The walk took a long time because we stopped at every food establishment along the way so John could feed his insatiable appetite for Italian foodI wondered if he would ever get full.

Finally we caught our first glimpse of the coliseum sitting at the end of a busy street, the home of gladiators and emperors, and a piece of living history. Wow! This was incredible!

Construction on the Coliseum started in 70 AD and ten years later Titus opened it. The opening ceremonies and games lasted for 100 days during which an astounding 5000 wild animals were put to death. The Coliseum had a capacity of 70,000 spectators who came to see everything from gladiator combats to wild

Budget Travel – What Is Hostelling

Hostelling was once thought of as the exclusive province of college kids traveling through Europe for the first time. However, hostelling has grow to include all ages, and all types of people. When traveling on a budget, staying at a hostel can be a great experience for the traveler with a sense of adventure.

Of course, hostel travel is not for everyone, and some travelers would rather spend extra money for solo accommodations. In general, hostel traveling is best suited to solo travelers, or to groups of young people traveling together.

Hostel stays are generally not recommended for families traveling with young children, and many hostels do not accept children under a certain age.

Most hostels are set up as dormitory style rooms, with a number of bunk beds arranged throughout the room. The number of bunk beds in a single room varies, with the average from four to ten bunks per room. Each traveler is assigned a specific bunk upon check-in.

Almost all hostels in the United States divide their accommodations according to gender, with the female guests in one block of rooms and the male guests in another. In multi-floor hostels, each gender is often assigned a specific floor or group of floors.

In many European locations and elsewhere around the world, however, many hostel rooms have mixed genders sharing a room. If this is a concern, be sure to ask about it.

Many woman traveling alone found no problem with these arrangements, and many have stayed in hostels throughout Europe, including Rome, London and Amsterdam. Some visitors, however, are surprised at these arrangements.

The bathroom accommodations at hostels vary as well, with some rooms containing a shared bathroom and shower, while other hostels will have shower and bathroom facilities located in the hallway. If this is an important consideration, you should make sure to ask about bathroom facilities when making the reservation.

And reservations are becoming increasingly important at hostels, especially during the summer months in popular locations.

Where once it was common for travelers simply to drop by the hostel and get a bed, it is now not at all unusual for hostels in popular tourist destinations to be booked solid for months.

The main appeal of staying at hostels, of course, is the price. The nightly rate for a hostel rarely rises above $25 or $30 per night, with most hostel accommodations costing far less.

With the average hotel room hovering around $100 to $150 in many locations, it is easy to see why hostels are becoming so popular.

In addition, the staff at most hostels are extremely accommodating and knowledgeable about the local area. Unlike many staff members of some luxury hotels, who travel in from the suburbs and rarely see the city in which the live, hostel staff tend to live in their city, and they have an intimate knowledge of the local attractions, including which attractions are can’t miss and which ones are a waste of money.

In addition, hostels often have access to discounts and coupons for local area attractions and restaurants, and they can provide valuable information on the best, lowest priced restaurants in the area.

While staying at a hostel is not for everyone, and the local hostel will never be mistaken for a Ritz Carlton, hostels can be wonderful budget accommodations for the budget minded traveler.

After all, the goal of travel is to get out and see the world, and hostel travel lets you spend your limited travel dollars doing just that.

Travel destinations: Rome, Italy – Part 7

This article is meant for budget travelers like me. I went to Rome in May. This was my second visit. The first time i went with Contiki, a travel agency that arranges tours for those 18-35, was in 2005. That was really an eye-opener and plus the tossing of the coin into the Trevi Fountain, i soon find myself back again.

Rome is a beautiful city where there is so much history. Must go places are obviously the Colosseum and the Vatican City. The Colosseum for me was less intriguing as compared to my first visit. I went into the Colosseum since i did not have the chance to during my first visit and i am a little disappointed. There is not much to see so for budget travelers, you may want to give this a miss. Take some photos from outside and head straight to the Palatine gardens and the City Ruins.

The Vatican Museum is fascinating even for someone like me who has not even visited her own museum in her own home country. It may seem overwhelming but an audio guide is extremely useful and will keep you entertained and enlightened during your visit. Don’t forget to visit the Sistine Chapel as well! Also, if you are a student, please make use of your student cards and get a discount! Instead of paying 12euros i only paid 8euros! You don’t have to be a student from EU. If you want to save more, share your audio guides!

The third must-go place has to be the Trevi Fountain! Visit this place at night, its beautiful! The lighting makes it seem as though you are in a different world. And remember to throw a coin into the fountain to wish that you will be back!

Other attractions like the Spanish Steps, Piazza Popolo, Via Del Corso and Via Condotti (Shopping districts) should all be visited as well. Take your time to walk and enjoy the breathtaking views of the city at night.

When planning for your trip, remember to plan way in advance, there are many many tourists from May onwards to end August. I stayed in BellaRoma Hostel which I will not recommend as it is too costly for a place that is so poorly furnished.

Travel to Italy – Rome and Venice

Where does one begin to start when discussing Italy. Well, if you intend to travel there, Rome and Venice are good places to start.

Rome

Perhaps you’ve heard of it? It goes without saying that Rome has a rather prominent past. Lets see, in Rome you will find…[deep breath]…the Vatican, Coliseum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Church of Saint Agnese, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and a guy name Allassandro. Just making sure you’re paying attention. Indeed, Rome is filthy with historically significant attractions. It seems you can’t turn around without bumping into something an Emperor built, captured or destroyed. For those willing to risk potential wrath, there are also the new Divinci Code tours, which take you to the locations found in the book.

In all serious, Rome is a city you should visit at least once in your life. No article could ever do it justice, so I’ll just stop here.

Venice

I fondly refer to Venice as the floating city even though it is apparently sinking. If you’ve seen Venice is movies or televisions shows, the depictions are accurate. Piazza San Marco looks exactly the same, birds and all. The Grande Canal is, well, a grand canal with incredible houses lining it and boats putting up down this water way. Built on mudflats in a lagoon, the city doesn’t really have much room to grow. It just seems paralyzed in time.

Once you’ve conquered the tourist attractions, it will be time to get serious about Venice. The best way to do this is stand in front of your hotel or hostel, determine which direction the tourist attractions lie and start walking in the opposite direction. While you may feel like you’re driving the wrong way on a freeway for a few minutes, you’ll eventually start getting into real Venice.

An entirely different side of Venice will appear and you’ll love it. You’ll find little cafes with locals happy to talk to you [and non-tourist prices]. In fact, the Venetians will tend to hold you in high regard since you’re a tourist who is bypassing the tourist areas. This, of course, will logically lead to a whirl of introductions to this nephew, that son of a brother and so on. Next thing you know, you’ll be complaining about Italian politicians and how things used to be better in the past.

While Rome and Venice are excellent travel destinations, you can’t really go wrong in Italy. For the adventurous, set your itinerary with the old map on a wall and dart technique.

Great Italian Vacations: Rome and Venice

When considering destinations in Europe to go on vacation Italy certainly should be at the top of any list. And when considering a visit to Italy, Rome and Venice are good places to start your trip.

Rome

With it’s very prominent place in world history Rome is the capital city of Italy. When traveling to Rome you’ll find such historical locations and sights like the Vatican, Coliseum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Church of Saint Agnese, Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps just to name a few of it’s landmarks.

Rome is a city rich indeed with historically significant landmarks and attractions. It’s been said that it’s nearly impossible to turn around anywhere in Rome and not see something an Emperor built, captured or destroyed.

Now, for those willing to risk potential wrath there are also new Divinci Code tours, which take you to the locations found in the very popular and now world famous book.

Rome is a city anyone with an interest in history at all simply has to visit at least once in their lifetime. As a city it is one of few places on this great earth that is quite simply best experienced rather than read about.

Venice

Venice is fondly referred to as the floating city. This tag even though it is apparently sinking. If you’ve seen Venice in movies or television shows, the depictions are accurate. Piazza San Marco looks exactly the same, birds and all. The Grande Canal is exactly that with incredible houses lining it and boats putting about, up down this water way.

Built on mudflats and in a lagoon it doesn’t really have much room to grow. It is very much a city that seems frozen in time.

When first arriving in Venice you will of course first want to conquer the usual tourist attractions. Once this has been done though it will be time to get serious about seeing Venice.

One of the best ways to accomplish this is to stand in front of your hotel or hostel, determine in which direction the tourist attractions lie and start walking in the opposite direction. While you may feel like you’re driving the wrong way on a freeway for a few minutes, you’ll eventually start getting into real Venice.

Once this real and very different side of Venice begins to appear you will no doubt love it. You’ll find little cafes filled with local citizens happy to converse with you. In fact, you’ll find that as a tourist bypassing the standard tourist route the Venetians will tend to hold you in very high regard. Be warned you’re will before long find yourself being introduced to everyone in sight by these enthusiastic people. As they welcome you into their very friendly community.

While Rome and Venice are excellent travel destinations, you can’t really go wrong anywhere in Italy.

Walking all Over Rome – An Easy Guide to Rome’s Must See Shoe Shops

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had a love of shoes. The first time my parents took my sisters and me to Rome in 1996 was when my love affair with shoes started, beginning with a trendy pair of black platforms – similar to a pair Ginger Spice would have worn in the Spice Girls around that time… Rome is famous for it’s style and high fashion, and this certainly applies in the shoe department. Not only can you find hundreds upon hundreds of fancy boutiques offering the latest in classic style and sophistication, Rome is famous for its ability to create fun and outlandish designs, flooding the market with shoes in unusual colours, shapes and materials. The list of high quality shoe shops in Rome is endless, but in terms of quality, I’d start with “Re Mishelle”, a shop which caters for those looking for high fashion, true work-of-art shoes, which are almost too good to be worn on the street. This shop, close to the Piazza del Popolo, stocks shoes from top Italian fashion designers, namely; Loriblu, Casare Paciotti, Vicini, Mario Bologna, Les Tropeziennes, Roberto Cavalli, Hamlet, Sergio Rossi, Lerre, Versus, Gianmarco Lorenzi, Ruco Line, Casadei, Gerardina di Maggio and Star Artioli, but the list truly goes on… “Petrocchi” can be found at Via dell’Orso 25, in the centre of Rome, take note that this is where the most phenomenal shoe shops are and for this reason it is wise to stay in a <a target=”_blank” "http://www.oh-holidays.com/en/italy/rome/apartments_1/">Rome apartment</a> or <a target=”_blank” "http://www.oh-holidays.com/en/italy/rome/hotels_1/">Rome hotel</a> in the heart of the shopping district to find the quirkiest boutiques, but also the big name shoes shops too. Petrocchi is a sophisticated store providing shoes of the highest quality leather, in numerous chic styles. Many high-class people visit this shop for their made-to-measure shoes and thus the prices can reflect the special attention given to each customer. Petrocchi is open from Tues-Fri 9 am-1 pm and 3:30-7:30 pm; Sat 10 am-1 pm and 3:30-7:30 pm and is closed Sun and Mon. Bruno Magli at Via Condotti 6, has a good reputation for stylish, well made shoes. Via Condotti is literally the nucleus of the shopping district in Rome and abundant with <a target=”_blank” "http://www.oh-holidays.com/en/italy/rome/accommodation_1/">Rome accommodation</a>. Again, this designer store is rather pricy, which is to be expected from many shoe shops in Rome. However, I always consider spending money on shoes money well spent as they protect your feet from the ground, so regardless of how comfortable, well made or simply gorgeous they are, they are a major necessity! With that in mind, Bruno’s shoes are rumoured to be so comfortable they are the preferred shoe of choice for many air stewardesses.

Travel destinations: Rome, Italy – Part 6

Rome is a magical place that is hard to descibe in words, much better to just have the experience. I, however will try. When I was there, I had the opportunity to spend a glorious 5 days. I talked to a girl from South Carolina on the way back who hated Rome. I asked “WHY?”. I later found out that she was only there for a day and a half. Definatley not enough time to enjoy that magnificent ancient city. This southern girl thought that the city closed down at 6 p.m. Not the case at all! Resteraunts open up at 7 p.m. for their dinner patrons, and stay open most of the night. Italians are passionate about their dining experiences, and Roma being a tourist town found amazing ways to profit from that. Heads up- Don’t be surprised when the complimentary bread costs you, also the linen charge and cutlery charge for the tables, and even making eye contact with the accordian player is going to cost you 5 euros. As an American this all sounds perposterous, but its a living to them. Its worth it all.

Must sees of Rome are all the obvious ones. The Collosium, the Pantheon, The Vatican (teh basilica and sistinth chapel are two of the most beautiful things I have ever seen). My advice is to get a map of the city with the landmarks clearly stated…because there are a ton! The national monument, the ruins, the Museum etc. Don’t let this all overwhelm you, though. There is much more to this city than all of that. Every night at the spanish steps you can find a 120 young twenty somethings shelling out 20euros for a free t-shirt and free beer at the nightly pub crawl. The Bio-Parko (ZOO) is great because no one thinks to go there, so you can be a tourist while taking a break from the other tourists. If you are into film, there is usually a great film festival going on. Outside of the Pantheon you can find actors dressed in period garb handing out directions to that evenings perfomance of the opera. three blocks from the spanish steps is an excellent (yet pricey) shopping district. No worries if you are worried about losing your americaness..there are Mcdonalds EVERYWHERE! “Roadway to America” it proclaims on all the signs. It makes me a little sad, actually. i say don’t waste your time, the burgers are gross and you have to pay extra for ketchup.

With that said, Rome has a bit of something for everyone and every price range. Tight budget? I recommend the Hotel Ottoviano. A hostel located right next to the Vatican and in the heart of it all. The metro has a stop right in that neighborhood. More frivalous? There are a ton of four and five star hotels located right by the central station. My advice is to keep an open mind, plan on spending a bit more than you expect, and know that you cannot do it all in a day and a half!
