Rome is popular with tourists who flock from around the world for a variety of reasons. Some visit to see the Vatican and Rome’s other religious monuments, a pilgrimage for Christians regardless of nationality. Others come for the culture, for the history and for the food. Tourism is big business in Rome and it’s a fascinating city to visit as it offers something for everyone. Here are some of the best places to see, and things to remember, when visiting Rome.
Plan your visit in advance. If you’re trying to stick to a budget then planning in advance is a good idea, so you don’t have to fork out more than you thought for attractions or transport. If you book flights and hotel a good few months before you plan to travel then you’ll save a good deal of money, with flights from the UK priced at around £60 return if you book early enough. Rome’s good transport links make the city accessible and therefore a viable option for cheap holidays. Think about the attractions you wish to visit also and look up how much they will cost, as some can be quite expensive, but its sometimes possible to book in advance and save money.
The two biggest attractions (the Colleseum and the Vatican) are popular for good reasons, they are simply stunning. The Colleseum stands proudly as a symbol of both the Roman Empire and modern day Rome as both a sacred place and a tourist destination. Under 18’s and over 65’s can get in for free in an effort to encourage visits, and any fees payable are subsidised to keep cost down. From the outside you see the south side has fallen down. In 847AD an earthquake caused the damage and it was never repaired. Some of the fallen stone was even used to construct St Peter’s Basilica. Standing inside you get a true idea of just how huge the Colleseum is, and at its peak how impressive it must have been. There is also a museum on the upper floor of the outer wall.
The Vatican is a must see for any trio to Rome whether you’re visiting for religious or sightseeing purposes. The scale of the building is one of the most impressive things, and the detailed interior decoration really is something to behold. The inside of the Sistine Chapel is perhaps the most iconic image of Vatican City and can be seen by member of the public. It’s also possible to climb right to the top of the city and look out across Rome, a nice sight if you’ve got the legs for it.
With so many flights to and from Rome it’s possible to visit either for a weekend, a mid week break or for a week long holiday and there’s so much to do you won’t be bored. Check out companies like Thomas Cook who often offer great deals on cheap holidays all year round, especially off season.
